Went to spray clear gloss on G scale Bachmann V&T 4-6-0 Big Hauler cab and tender.
Washed tender shell with dish soap, rinsed.
Same prep I did to passenger cars earlier - primer covered them just fine.
Started spraying tender with Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear and paint just beaded up on Bachmann factory paint.
Then tried cheap Walmart clear gloss on other side - lesser effect of same trouble.
It's not that the factory paint crazed, clear just beaded up on it like rain on car wax.
Now what do I do?

I like it - if it's the same all over, I'd leave it as is. reminds me of the 'Hammerlux' paint we used to use on Machine Tools a few years ago. _________________ Murray McKenzie

Is there a phone number on the Rustoleum? They may have a technical support department. Paint formulas have changed a lot the last several years. Lots of people are having problems with paint now. My friend Todd does auto restorations and he says all of the paint they use has changed.
He had to re learn how to shoot all of the brands and types he had used for a long time.
I know with color paint you can use rubbing compound to even out paint...not sure about clear.
If there isn't a number on the can, check their website. I would think they should have tech support.

Just found this info on their website, it's their main page but it only lists
address and phone in Canada. The 800 number should work from the States though.
EDIT Just called the number, it works from here.

There has been some chat about changes in paint formulations, including Rustoleum, on the 7/8ths Forum - http://www.7-8ths.info/index.php/topic,16681194.0.html _________________ Bill

Two ideas:
First -- Try Tamiya clear coats in the future; great quality, fine mist ...
Second -- And, more immediately relevant ... some folks use Future Floor Wax on models, it's clear, self-leveling ... that self-leveling feature might work to even out the surface. Lay tender on side, apply to the horizontal plane ... allow that to dry before moving to next surface.
Good luck! _________________ Cheers,

Have been doing that on plastic models and HO and On30 traqins since 1983 or so.
Didn't know how it would hold up to weather and such on a G scale loco.
And with my health the way it is now, the concentration required for airbrushing is not available most days.

Same thoughts as the Tamiya.
There is a bottle of Future in the paint bin had thought about brushing it on but I decided spray enamel would hold up better.
Wrong decision.
Thought my logical reasoning out of the options was on target.
Appears very much not - the logic was flawed. _________________ Today's scientists have substituted mathematics for experiments, and they wander off through equation after equation, and eventually build a structure which has no relation to reality. -- Nikola Tesla, Modern Mechanics and Inventions, July, 1934 |

Willow, did you use normal dish soap? Most of them are "skin-friendly", so they have something like aloe vera or other stuff in it. The orange-peel skin makes me guess that. Perhaps you should have used isopropyl alcohol or like silicone remover. Take the shell to the next car painter or customizer. Perhaps they can tell you what to use. Might be a railway buff that paints it for you... you just make a donation to their kitty.
It doesn't hurt to ask.
